Effect of Ramadan fasting on intra ocular pressure changes in healthy subjects
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: Annually, millions of Muslims all over the world observe the fasting rules based on its measures; this highlights the importance of studies in this field as a worthwhile model for intermittent fasting. It is obvious that changes in lifestyle over fasting have outstanding effects on physiological parameters. The current study was carried out to investigate the IOP and serum electrolytes as two important factors that are influenced by human lifestyle. Methods: Eighty-nine fasting and healthy participants including men and women with mean age of 34.97 were included in our study based on the inclusion and exclusion parameters. During this project, Ramadan coincided with the summer (between June and July 2015). All participants were monitored by an expert examiner and blood samples were collected and IOP was measured by tonometer (Topcon, 1-75, Hasunuma-cho, Itabashi-KU, Tokyo, Japan 2014). The participants were examined one week before and one week after Ramadan. Results: There was a significant reduction in physiological IOP in healthy people after Ramadan. In line with this, the serum electrolytes were altered by fasting so that Na, K, Se experienced a significant decrease while serum phosphorous increased (P

Effects of Ramadan fasting on inflammatory biomarkers and body composition in healthy subjects
Introduction: During Ramadan, adult Muslims abstain from drinking and eating from sunrise to sunset. This religious practice influences individuals’ lifestyle factors such as eating behavior, meal schedule, and sleep pattern. These changes may affect endocrine and neuroendocrine circadian patterns, and consequently, cardiovascular indices. This study was performed to investigate the effects of ...

Introduction: Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims during which avoid from eating, drinking and sexual intercourse for about 13-17 hours. The aim of this study was surveying the effects of Islamic fasting in Ramadan on lipid profile and blood pressure.Materials and Methods: we designed this study in two phases, a week before and a week after Ramadan month. Eighty nine healthy subjects with 20-50...
full textEffect of etomidate on intra-ocular pressure.
Etomidate, a new short-acting non-barbiturate hypnotic, was administered to 40 patients between the ages of 12 years and 65 years. Intra-ocular pressure was measured before and after etomidate injection using a Schiotz tonometer. A significant reduction of intra-ocular pressure was found to follow etomidate injection in spite of the often associated myoclonic movements. The mechanism of reducti...
full textThe effect of Ramadan fasting on fasting serum glucose in healthy adults.
The effect of Ramadan fasting on fasting serum glucose (FPG) is still a matter of controversy. One hundred and fifteen healthy volunteers fasted for > or = 25 days during Ramadan. Blood samples were taken 1 week before Ramadan and on the 14th and 28th day of Ramadan. Serum glucose was determined by the glucose oxidase method. FPG decreased from 88.4 + 9.0 mg/dl to 62.9 +/- 7.7 mg/dl (p < 0.001)...
full textEffect of Ramadan Fasting on Renal Physiology
All the world's religions recommend a period of fasting, and of these, one whole month of intermittent fasting every year is particular to Islam. Muslims have two meals, one immediately after sunset and the other just before dawn with a period of fasting ranging from 11-18 hours. Therefore, we can assume that physiological changes occurring during Ramadan would be different from those occurring...
